Member of the Month

Bernice Morrell

Bernice Morrell was recently added to our Honored Members List. On April 12th Bernice will celebrate her 70th year as a member of CIBC. This makes her the longest consistent member of our congregation. We asked her to tell our members more about herself.

"I have three children-Marvin, Jr., Debbie and Kenny; five grandsons, one granddaughter, one step grandson and one step granddaughter, one deceased grandson, one great-granddaughter, one brother, nieces and quite a few cousins.

My mother, grandmother and aunts always brought me to CIBC and I was baptized by Rev. Pieces when I was 12 years old. I attended Sunday School in the West Cape May Chapel as did most of the children living in West Cape May.

During WWII I married Frank Smykowski, Jr. in the Churchs Chapel and lived in Oklahoma for about seven months when he was sent back to the South Pacific where he died. I met Marvin after the war when he returned from England. His folks had a grocer store in West Cape May. Rev. Pemberton married us in the church in 1947. Marvin was bpatized and joined the church in 1949 or 1950.

During the time Rev. Pemberton was our Pastor he formed a men's club, The Fisherman's Club. They met for dinner monthly and I used to take my turn doing the dinners. I taught Sunday School in the Primary Department in the past and one of the people I remember was Miss Alice (Alice Wilke) who was the Superintendent for years. Also, for the Pastor before Pastor Spriggs, I typed the weekly bulletins. That was when they had to be mimeographed.

Cape Island Baptist Church as always been and part of my life."

Thank you Bernice for all your years of service to our Lord and your family and Cape Island Baptist Church.

CONGRATULATIONS

When you see Paul Fritsch remember to congratulate him on his promotion to Lieutenant on the Middle Township Police Department. Paul is the son of Charlie and Ruth Fritsch and has been a member of our congregation for a long time. Just click on the picture at left to see and enlargement of Paul, his wife, Jennifer and Lauren and Paul Jr.

Congratulations to Harvey Williams on his nomination to Cape May Star and Wave's Volunteer of the Week. Harvey is an active member of the Cape May Volunteer Fire Department and other civic organizations. See the article written about him on the bulletin board by the back door.

Bakeless Bake Sale

A bit of news I have today

A Bakeless Bake Sale is on the way!

On these busy days, would you want to bake

Pies or cookies or even a cake?

You'd be surprised if you counted the cost

Of materials, heat and time that is lost.

Baking for sale is extra work

Yet we know nobody wishes to shirk.

So we thought of a plan that's truly grand

And we feel quite sure you'll understand.

In this little envelope please put the price

Of a pie or cake or something that's nice.

Without a fuss you've done your part.

I'm sure you'll give with a willing heart.

You don't even need to add a stamp

And your gift helps send a child to camp!

It's almost time for our children to be going back to camp. Each summer our congregations helps families send their children to Camp Lebanon for a week of fun and spiritual fellowship. If you are able to contribute to the BAKELESS BAKE SALE, please do so and give a child an experience they will never forget. Thanks.

Sunday School News

The children of the Sunday School began a new study on Jesus In the Temple. This is a very exciting unit. They are currently building a scale model of the Temple in Jerusalem. They prepared some of the foods eaten during Passover and studied the meaning of each foot. If you are interested in helping with any of the Sunday School classes, (even if your don't want to teach) please see Sharon Spriggs. Volunteers are also needed to help with Children's Church during the Sunday Worship Service.

Family Night Program

March 17th will be our Family Night Program, March Movie Madness. A covered Dish dinner will begin at 6:00 and the movie will begin at 6:45. Popcorn and soda will be supplied during the movie. We will be showing Second Hand Lions. Bring a beach chair or something comfortable to sit on or you can use one of the churches folding chairs.
